v Coleman’s Hatch Cancelled Rain.
v Ockley  Cancelled More Rain

v Princes Risborough draw
Society 187 for 2 Dec
Princes Risborough 152-8

Adrian Gale played brilliantly in our first game of the season, hitting mightily to score 130*. Andy Graham chugged along with 31* before the declaration.A good opening burst from our new young Aussie, Charles Boots, was followed up by 3 for 51 by Paul Fielding . However Princes Risborough held out for the draw.

v Odney Club Lost
Society 55 all out
Odney 56 for 2

It was predicted that 120 would be a good score on a very slow early season track, but 55 certainly wasn’t. Neil Holmes took the two wickets to fall.

v South Weald Lost
Society 173 for 5 (40 overs)
South Weald 174 for 6

A new fixture at an attractive ground in the countryside near Brentwood. We batted consistently with 30 from Paul Spencer (guesting from Southborough) and 40 from Andrew Moss. A fiery burst from Nathan Reay removed the openers but he misfired on his return and , with the overs per bowler restricted to ten apiece, we fell to defeat in the last over.

Our results have picked up in June and July and the batsmen have been enjoying themselves. However the most heartening development has been the allround play of teenagers Angus Graham and Charles Bootes.

8th June v Deando Ruxley.Won by 51 runs.
Society 149 for 6 (Angus Graham 34*).
Deando Ruxley 98 all out (Neil Holmes 5 for 12, Charles Bootes 4 for 27).

We picked up this fixture at the last minute through the Club Cricket conference. As appears to be often the case nowadays, our opponents favoured a 40 overs game rather than the traditional timed game. Nevertheless we are showing that we can adapt and pulled off a comfortable victory. Neil Holmes returned his best Society figures.

15th June v Chipstead. Lost by 3 wickets.
Society 205 for 5 dec (Rob Humphreys 60*, Ronald Paterson 48).
Chipstead 206 for 7 (Angus Graham 3 for 17).

Excellent batting by Rob Humphreys and the skipper gave us a competitive total against very useful opponents. At one point Chipstead were winning easily but Angus Graham’s lively bowling gave them some very anxious moments.

22nd June v Newdigate. Lost by 6 wickets.
Society 232 for 4 dec (Andy Graham 53,Adrian Gale 68).
Newdigate 236 for 4.

Our batsmen scored freely with the openers in particularly fine form. There was always the feeling that the Newdigate middle and lower order would be vulnerable, but we didn’t get to see many of them!

29th June v Matfield. Lost by 5 wickets.
Society 185 for 4 dec(Adrian Gale 81).
Matfield 186 for 5.

This was a very attractive new fixture near Tunbridge Wells. Adrian Gale’s excellent batting continued but we failed to take early wickets. Peter Hartland pulled us back into the game although we lost on the penultimate ball through a misfield from a borrowed player.

6th July v The Lemmings Won by 6 wickets.
Lemmings 111(David Chapman 3 for 16).
Society 112 for 4 (Rob Humphreys 50*).

Another new fixture, this time at Queens College, Oxford. The scheduled all day game started after lunch due to rain. The Lemmings fielded just 8 players and offered little opposition to our medium pacers. Scoring proved difficult against a tight attack and keen fielding, but Rob Humphreys saw us home.

9th July v Old Leightonians. Rain and more rain.

13th July v Britwell Salome.Won by 58 runs.
Society 139 all out (Charles Bootes 56, Adrian Gale 41).
Britwell 81 all out. (Angus Graham 4 for 30, Charles Bootes 3 for 16).

A wet wicket made conventional batting difficult but proved no object for our young Aussie, who smashed the ball to all parts. He then combined with the equally youthful Angus Graham, to bowl Britwell out.

18th July v Plaxtol. Draw.
Society 216 for 2 dec (Andy Graham 102*, Andrew Moss 68).
Plaxtol 162 for8 (Peter Hartland 3 for 16).

A first visit to this peaceful Kent ground for a midweek fixture. Andy Graham with his first Society ton put on 183 for the first wicket with Andrew Moss. Early wickets for Peter Hartland put us on top, but we just failed to spin Plaxtol out. Michael Thompson of Plaxtol became the second unbeaten opening bat centurion. In the same week his brother and father also scored tons for the village club.

20th July v Stock. Won by 7 wickets.
Stock 213 for 8.
Society 217 for 3 (Adrian Gale 78, Rob Humphreys 64*).

In another 40 overs game, Paul Fielding picked up 3 wickets against his home club despite disappearing over the tiny leg side boundary at regular intervals! Excellent top order batting with Messrs Gale and Humphreys to the fore saw us home with 7 overs to spare.

24th July v Kew. Lost by 44 runs.
Kew 276 all out.
Society 232 for 5 (David Hill 103*, Rob Humphreys 56).

45 overs a side this time and a long afternoon in the sun whilst Kew’s Dunusinghe blitzed 166. Against a competitive league attack and defensive fields, the chase was always likely to be impossible, especially after we were reduced to 20 for 3 after 12 overs. A superb hundred by David Hill, together with good support from Rob Humphreys, nearly proved such thinking wrong.

27th July v Great and Little Warley.Won by 3 runs.
Society 199 for 2 (Adrian Gale 99, Andy Graham 40).
Gt. Warley 196 for 8 (Paul Fielding 5 for 87, Neil Holmes 3 for 38).

Another very hot day saw our Essex opponents suggesting 35 overs each.We bumped this up to 40 and hostile bowling on a bouncy track made batting difficult initially. Adrian Gale fell one short of a well-deserved 100 but we were happy with our total. The Gt.Warley openers chased the target aggressively despite fiery bowling from Angus Graham.155 for 1 with 10 overs left seemed a cakewalk. Neil Holmes, bowling off spin with bruised ribs from batting in the nets, started to get exaggerated turn whilst Paul Fielding plugged away for 18 overs. Their refusal to accept defeat got an unexpected reward when the Warley batting imploded under the pressure to leave us unlikely but happy winners.

3rd August v Sparsholt. Abandoned as a draw

Cricket Society 154 for 7(Angus Graham 42*)

We struggled against a strong attack until an unbeaten partnership of 42 between Angus Graham and Tom Carmichael gave some respectability. Rain put an end to play just before tea.

4th August v Blackheath.  Lost

Cricket Society 189 for 6 dec ( Tony Crockert 107)
Blackheath 190 for 6 (Angus Graham 4 for 26)

The previous night’s rain freshened up the track and brilliant catching left us 4 wickets down cheaply. However Tony Crockert chose the moment to score his thirteenth Society ton , a record number. Many congratulations on a great achievement. Our bowlers were not quite able to complete the job despite another wholehearted performance by Angus Graham, his last before heading to Scotland for pre-season rugby training. Watch out for the his name in the junior international squads.

10th August v Hurlingham.  Draw

Cricket Society 230 for 8 dec (Raza Ali Dar 59, Ronald Paterson 52*)
Hurlingham 197 for 5 (Neil Holmes 3 for 63)

A lively Hurlingham attack made batting difficult and we were indebted to the fluid elegance of Raza Ali Dar and the stubbornness of Tony Crockert prior to lunch, together with a fine knock by captain Ronald Paterson after lunch. Hurlingham were in the pound seats at tea but Neil Holmes and Raza bowled us into contention . Raza bowled ex-Hampshire batsman Sean Morris cheaply. Rain prevented a definite conclusion.

15th August v The Forty.  Won

Forty Club 180 for 8 dec
Cricket Society 182 for 4 (Rob Humphreys 102*)

The Forty Club scored at little more than 2 an over for much of their innings . An eventual acceleration led to a late declaration but didn’t prevent Rob Humphreys from leading us home in some style.

17th August v Odiham and Greywell.  Won

Odiham 145 all out (Neil Holmes 4 for 46)
Cricket Society 146 for 3 (Tony Crockert 74*)

A day to remember for super-vet Ian Crossley as he took the field with his son, Matt , and grandson, Luke. Luke took up the promise of money from granddad for each wicket, by picking up 3. Tony Crockert made batting look rather easier than it actually was.

24th August v Broadhalfpenny Brigands.  Tie

Cricket Society 150 for 6 dec(Adrian Gale 42, Rob Humphreys 39)
Brigands 150 all out.(David Chapman 4 for 29)

Overnight rain proved too much for the covers and it was no surprise when we were inserted. At 12 for 3 are prospects looked limited. However Adrian Gale and  Rob Humphreys put on 76 , whilst David Chapman and Ronald Paterson provided a late flourish. The Brigands looked in control at 117 for 3 , but Paul fielding and David Chapman bowled us back into the game and set up a tense last over. The final pair were unable to beat the agility of John Symons on the last ball and the game ended in a tie. Surely a result to go down with other great games played at the cradle of cricket!

Ewhurst were unable to raise a side and the Sanderstead game fell foul of dreadful weather.

14th September v Rudgwick.  Won

Cricket Society 116 for 8 dec (Tony Crockert 51*)
Rudgwick 104 all out (Neil Holmes 4 for 19, Charles Bootes 3 for 23)

Rudgwick did well to prepare a pitch after the recent rains, although it’s fair to say that batting was extremely difficult. Tony Crockert stood out as wickets fell regularly. Tom Carmichael persuaded his opposing skipper that tea should be delayed whilst a few vital final runs were squeezed out. Fine bowling by Neil Holmes , aided by the return of our young Aussie from the fleshpots of Europe , led to a narrow win.

21st September v Reigate Pilgrims Lost

Cricket Society 157 all out (Adrian Gale 42, Andy Graham 36)
Reigate Pilgrims 160 for 3.

Amazingly, sunny weather returned for the first time in several weeks for our final game. Unfortunately , with the exception of the openers, our performance couldn’t match it. A very good season ended on a slightly disappointing note.
